Bodega X New Balance 997S
Colourway: TBA [TBA]
As avid sports fans we make no apologies for our hatred of Boston. We hate the Boston Bruins. We hate the Boston Celtics. We even hate the Boston Red Sox.
On the flip side of all that hate is love. We love New Balance, and the philosophically-minded retailer, Bodega. And when those two Boston-based companies collaborate on a sneaker, odds are we’ll love that shoe too.
Admonishing the mentality of sneaker buyers who entomb their shoes in plastic display boxes, Bodega decided to create a “No Days Off” shoe for those who prefer to rock rather than stock what they buy.
Bodega encourages buyers of its 997S collaboration to make practical use of it. “This is a shoe for wearing every day, for taking outside, for doing actual stuff in. Wear it in the rain; get dirt on it.”
The aptly named “No Days Off” shoe consists of a constructed mesh upper with leather and distressed suede overlays, and utilizes New Balance’s ABZORB and ENCAP cushioning for walking comfort. The X-Pac laminate heel counter and wavy mudguard design were inspired by the New Balance 660.
There much to like about this sneaker. Our only criticism is with the white laces that seem out of place against the shoe’s colourway and materials. No problem: three different sets of laces come with this 997S and the red and black options (see below) make a much better fit.
The customized classic runner will be available April 6th from Bodega’s web shop for $210 ($160 USD). We’ve tested Bodega’s fulfillment of Canadian orders and were quite satisfied with the service.
