We don’t pretend to understand the direction Asics has taken with its fabled Onitsuka Tiger (OT) brand, which favours couture over heritage, but it has resulted in some spectacular designs.

The storied Japanese marque is celebrating its seventieth anniversary, and reminiscent of how Puma honoured the fiftieth anniversary of its legendary Suede, OT has turned to a number of fashion designers and collaborated with them to create hallmark editions of its classic models.

This special Serrano is the fourth example of a seven shoe series. Working with Shimo Zhou, a footwear designer for the Staff Only label, OT created this significant rework of what was originally a track and field shoe from the 1970s.

OT states that this interpretation of the Serrano was based on a theme of “extra protection means peacefulness and ease.” The phrase sounds like something that was lost in translation, but the result speaks for itself: the exaggerated toe and heel panels and overt double lacing system are in-your-face details that not only define the shoe, but also look great as part of the overall bold design.

Previous models in this seventieth anniversary series included collaborations with Christian Dada, KKtP, and Cinoh. Still to come are the results of projects with Sulvam and Kathleen Kye.

It won’t come as a surprise to followers of OT that Asics has not made any effort to make this collection available to Canadians, preferring instead to limit its marketing to Americans.

Shouldn’t anniversary celebrations be inclusive instead of exclusive?

All of this means Canadian sneakerheads will have to get a little creative if they want to obtain any of these special edition designs for their collections.
